A house that begins with a slit in the wall

In the quiet south of Mallorca, where almond trees give way to old olive groves, Pawson and Silvestrin built something in the late eighties that still has no equal on the island. The house is 600 square metres of clean lines and salmon-pink walls that seem to catch fire against the green at dusk. You enter through a narrow slit in the façade. Behind it, a tall-walled courtyard — the heart of the place — gathers the sun and holds onto it.

Thirteen hectares surround the villa. Not a neighbour in sight. It is the kind of place you come to disappear for a while, with family, or to mark an occasion that deserves a setting like this.

Inside, the essentials still rule: high ceilings, tiled floors, the odd wooden detail, windows set exactly where they earn their view. Some frame the olive trees, some the mountains, one or two the sea beyond. The kitchen and dining room open straight onto the courtyard, so you are rarely quite sure whether you are indoors or out.

Two pools, tennis, and a roof for the end of the day

The infinity pool runs 30 metres and spills into a second, smaller one below. At one end there is a jacuzzi section — where everyone ends up, drink in hand, once the sun drops. Lawn and trees all around. Tucked at the far edge of the garden, half hidden, a clay tennis court for anyone who can't sit still.

Go up to the roof terrace at least once. The view goes all the way round: fields, mountains, sea. Down below, an organic vegetable garden keeps the kitchen supplied, and a cactus garden makes a strange, lovely spot to do nothing at all.

• Bedroom 2: queen-size bed, en-suite bathroom with bathtub/shower.

• Bedroom 4: queen-size bed, shared bathroom with shower.

Guest house — one bedroom

• Bedroom 5: queen-size bed and a private shower room, set apart for anyone wanting their own space.

One extra guest can be accommodated on request.

Services

Included in your stay: a villa manager who keeps an eye on everything, breakfast each morning (cooked and continental), two hours of daily housekeeping, pool and garden upkeep, and bathroom toiletries.

On request, add a private chef, a driver, airport transfers, lunches and dinners, a stocked larder for your arrival, or massage and spa treatments at the house. A final cleaning fee applies and is billed separately.
